After the way that the U.S. National team performed last week I'm glad that MLS Cup 2009 is being played on Sunday to help me forget. The LA Galaxy, led by MLS MVP Landon Donovan and some guy named David Beckham, are going up against Real Salt Lake, the last team to qualify for this years playoffs. Qwest Field in Seattle should be packed with 40,000 fans watching to see if the Galaxy can finally live up to the expectations that they created when they signed David Beckham a few years back.
Both teams play an attacking style and both feature quality defenders and athletic goalkeepers. Javier Morales, Robbie Findley, Kyle Beckerman, Jamison Olave, and a host of other quality attacking options will help take the game to the favored Galaxy from the beginning. On the other side of the ball, the Galaxy will lean heavily on the considerable talents of Donovan and Beckham but will also utilize the quality role players that Bruce Arena has brought in to strengthen the squad during the off season. At the end of the day this game is going to be decided by the play of the superstars for each team. As much as I'd prefer to see Real Salt Lake take home the title, I get the feeling that Donovan is going to be on a mission and when he is determined he can be a dominant force. I'm going to predict a 3-2 Galaxy victory with 2 goals for Donovan. I'll do a post game analysis for all you fans out there. Check out the game on ESPN2 at 8:30 EST on Sunday night.
