Beckham heading back to Milan. Where does that leave Donovan?

With news of David Beckham's now annual loan move to AC Milan being released to the media, the obvious question for American soccer fans is how this whole saga will impact a potential Landon Donovan loan or transfer? Will the Galaxy brass be willing to part with both of their marquee attractions? For Donovan's sake, I hope the answer is yes.

It would be wrong for the Galaxy to hold back America's best player because of their mishandling of the Beckham situation. Donovan has made his intentions to move across the pond clear and the Galaxy front office should make every attempt to help him on his way. Donovan has been a model citizen with the Galaxy for a long time and he bent over backwards to accommodate Beckham despite the circus that followed him to LA. I understand that there is a business side to professional soccer, so I'm not expecting the Galaxy to let him go on the cheap but I feel like Donovan has earned the right to make a move away from the club. Even if Donovan is given a loan move similar to Beckham's, which will see him play with Milan starting in January and returning to the Galaxy after the World Cup, I would be happy with that outcome.

Donovan needs to play in Europe to be as sharp as possible entering the World Cup. He is the engine that makes the U.S. national team run and he is the only player on the squad that can dominate a game by himself. Landon has been playing at an incredibly high level this year and it is the perfect time for him to give Europe another chance. Now lets hope that Mr. Anschutz and Mr. Leiweke don't stand in his way.
