U-17 World Cup; Davies recovery; Donovan wins Honda Award

U-17 World Cup preview

The U-17 World Cup is set to begin in Nigeria on Monday and the American side on hand may be the strongest squad that has ever represented the stars and stripes. Now, I'm no expert on these players but Brent Latham over at ESPN is and here's his story about the U.S. and their chances in this tournament. The U-17 tournament is extremely fun to watch and generally offers a chance to see the best and brightest from this age group, unlike the U-20 addition that has a great deal of club involvement in the players availability. This U.S. team is extremely skilled and plays and attaching style and that is without three of their top former players in Joseph Gyau, Charles Renken and Sebastian Lletget who have all chosen not to play for one reason or another. Despite their absence, the players and coaches seem to think that this team can make a big move in this tournament and even has a chance to compete for the title. The U.S. games will be shown on ESPNU so check your local listings for dates and times. I've always wanted to say that.

Davies takes first steps towards recovery

Two weeks after suffering serious injuries in a fatal car accident, reports are indicating that Charlie Davies is making progress in his recovery and has even taken his first steps in recent days. This is remarkable news for Davies and his family as he starts on his long rehabilition journey. Lets hope the good news keeps pouring in.

Donovan wins 6th Honda player of the year award

United States national team midfielder Landon Donovan won his sixth Honda Award this week after scoring 5 goals and 10 assists in 15 appearances this year for the national team. Donovan was in great form all summer and led the Americans to a second place finish in the Confederations Cup and helped them qualify for their sixth consecutive World Cup and Donovans third.
