We all saw Onyewu go down and immediately call for help late in the final World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica. We all let out a collective "shit." The we heard that he'd be out for 3-4 months and we said "OK. I can live with that. Atleast he'll be ready for the World Cup." Well after having undergone successful surgery to repair the torn patellar tendon in his left knee, his doctors have put his recovery at 6 months. Which would be late April, which would give him about a month and a half to get ready for the World Cup, which isn't really enough time, which means Jay DeMerit better get Lasik surgery so he never has to worry about contacts again. Now as a group, let's all scream "MOTHER****ER" at the top of our lungs. Feeling any better? Yeah, me neither.
This means that in just a few weeks the United States national team will have lost a starting forward and central defender for next summers World Cup. These are two very painful losses to a team that seemed to have finally settled on a pretty steady starting eleven. Now Bob Bradley has to go back to the drawing board and see who needs to be brought into the starting lineup to help plug the holes. Next months friendlies will give us some idea as to who he might see as potential replacements. This may sound crazy but this may be an opportunity to get Freddy Adu a chance if he can pick up his play at the club level. I know, I know but is he any worse than Conor Casey? Plus, his chemistry with Altidore up top might work out. I'm just throwing that one out there for you to chew on.
